Your First 30 Days: A Calm Plan When Debt Feels Overwhelming
No spreadsheets on day one. Four short weeks of small, concrete steps that turn panic into a plan.
How I Cleared My Debts · 21 August 2026 · 7 min read
Week 1 — Get the full picture
List every debt: balance, interest rate, minimum payment. Rough numbers are fine. The relief comes from seeing the total instead of imagining it. The debt tracker keeps it in one place.
Week 2 — Protect the essentials
Rent or mortgage, energy, council tax or local property tax, food, and anything with legal consequences come first. These are priority debts. Credit cards, while stressful, are not the thing that puts your home at risk.
Week 3 — Free up one payment
One cancelled subscription. One renegotiated insurance renewal. One bill moved to a cheaper tariff. Send that amount at your target debt and nothing else needs to change this month.
Week 4 — Pick your order and start
Choose snowball or avalanche, set your target debt, and log your first payment. Then leave the plan alone and let it work.
What not to do in month one
- Do not take a consolidation loan you have not compared properly.
- Do not pay a company for advice that is free elsewhere.
- Do not aim for a perfect budget. Aim for a repeatable one.

If things are urgent right now
If you have missed rent, mortgage, energy, tax or court-ordered payments, are facing eviction or enforcement action, cannot afford food, or you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please speak to a person — not a calculator. Free, confidential and qualified debt advice exists in most countries, and using it does not harm your credit file.
How I Cleared My Debts provides educational information, organisational tools and estimates. It does not provide personalised financial, legal, tax or regulated debt advice. Results depend on the information you enter and may not reflect lender calculations. If you are struggling with priority bills, legal action or unaffordable repayments, contact a qualified free debt-advice organisation in your country.
